The Austin Independent School District Police Department establishes a safe and secure environment for our future leaders to learn, grow and succeed both inside and outside the classroom.
Austin ISD Police employs 85 full-time police officers, including 43 school resource officers, 20 patrol officers and two mental health officers. Two SROs are assigned to every high school campus and one SRO is assigned to every middle school campus.
The department also employs 39 civilian staff, including dispatchers, office support staff, emergency management and life safety systems personnel. The department provides general law enforcement, plus security and safety services for Austin ISD, 24 hours a day, year-round.
On Aug. 3, 2017, the Austin ISD Police Department received an official notice from the Texas Police Chiefs Association Foundation of the achievement of Re-Recognized Status for compliance with the Texas Law Enforcement Agency's 166 Best Practices Recognition Program. The Department is proud to be the first school district police department to receive this recognition.
Under the guidance of our new Chief of Police, Ashley A. Gonzalez, the Austin ISD Police Department is a proactive agency that has specialized divisions including a K9 Unit, a Patrol Division, a Criminal Investigations Division that has Detectives in Child Abuse and Gang Prevention, and a Mental Health Unit. Additional specialized units are expected in the future as the agency continues to grow.
